[Interview] Supplementing Synthetic Nitrogen Applications with N-FINITY

N-Finity_logoWith corn and soybean planters starting to roll, high nitrogen prices are at the forefront of everyone’s mind. In this interview, Agricen's Scott Lay speaks with WITY Radio about N-FINITY, which makes natural forms of nitrogen more available to the crop to supplement a grower’s synthetic or applied nitrogen.

Dennis Michelsen – WITY Radio: With where commodity prices are right now, it's all about getting the best yield you can. And that's all about getting your soil's biology to work for you, which is what N-FINITY does.

Scott - Agricen: It does. We also want to maximize yield with the cost of inputs in mind. As farmers prepare for the 2026 planting season, commodities are at about break-even prices. We're not attempting to find new ways for them to spend more, but rather to redeploy or reinvest those input dollars to create a good result with less synthetic nitrogen.

Dennis - WITY Radio: What makes N-FINITY different than other nitrogen efficiency technologies?

Scott Lay – Agricen: N-FINITY is an easy to handle technology that is designed to supplement synthetic nitrogen applications and improve nitrogen use efficiency. It has three modes of action, which really makes it different than most competitive products that rely on only a single mode of action. With three modes of action, we get a greater consistency of response over a broad range of growing environments, soil types, crops and weather circumstances.

In real farm fields last year, nearly 200 Nutrien Ag Solutions branches and their customers across the United States took advantage of N-FINITY, and we’ve tabulated the results. In 903 trials across 10 different crops, N-FINITY had an 81% win rate, and provided a +5.2% yield advantage across those crops compared to check. Specific to corn, the average yield response was +7.1 bu/a compared to check. That's translates into real money, whether corn is $4.60 a bushel or otherwise.

Dennis - WITY Radio: Nitrogen can be lost so easily, so having a product that helps supplement nitrogen is important.

Scott Lay – Agricen: Many people are familiar with products that fix atmospheric nitrogen, but nitrogen use efficiency is larger than just fixing atmospheric nitrogen. N-FINITY does fix nitrogen as one of its modes of action, but N-FINITY's other two modes of action also contribute substantially to its efficacy and consistency.

One is N-FINITY's ability to recruit nitrogen-fixing microbes that are native in the soil. They're in every soil type in varying amounts, and the extent to which we can draw those into the crop’s root structure will aid in supplying more natural nitrogen. The other is N-FINITY's ability to liberate organic pools of nitrogen in the soil. As organic matter and cation exchange capacity go up, increasing amounts of organic pools of nitrogen need to be converted to a plant-available form, and N-FINITY can help do that.

N-FINITY doesn't replace nitrogen entirely, but if you can provide more nitrogen to the crop from an alternative source—essentially from the nitrogen that already exists either in the soil or the air—that's a positive.

N-FINITY is available from Nutrien Ag Solutions.
