[Interview] Supercharging Fall Fertility Programs with TITAN XC

Titan XC Fall FertilizerAs combines roll, growers are already starting to make decisions about how to get that 2027 crop off to a good start. With fall fertilizer an important consideration for next year’s success, Agricen’s Scott Lay spoke with WITY Radio about maximizing the impact of fall fertility programs with TITAN XC.

Dennis Michelsen – WITY Radio: Why should TITAN XC be part of a grower’s fall fertility plan?

Scott Lay – Agricen: You can think of TITAN XC as a supercharger for that fall dry fertilizer application. It increases the amount of nutrients that will be available next spring, when next year's crop needs them most.

Dennis – WITY Radio: Producers don’t want to make another pass in the field, so how is this applied?

Scott – Agricen: TITAN is easy for the farmer to use because it is impregnated or sprayed on the dry fertilizer prills at a local Nutrien Ag Solutions retail center. So there is no additional pass and no additional work as it relates to any farm operation.

Dennis – WITY Radio: Now, you mentioned supercharging dry fertilizer, how does TITAN do that?

Scott – Agricen: When applied to dry fertilizer prills, the metabolites and organic acids in TITAN enhance the mineralization or breakdown of those prills. Think of the fertilizer prills as essentially small pebbles or rocks that are applied to the surface of the soil. Over time, Mother Nature will do its part to convert those nutrients to plant-available forms. But what TITAN does is increase the speed at which that occurs by about 20%. So it's an advantage when you get more nutrients available for next year's crop as opposed to waiting several years for those nutrients to mineralize.

Dennis – WITY Radio: We talk about the ROI, but I think we also have to look at how often a product wins.

Scott – Agricen: TITAN performs very consistently, as it has for the past decade so that it’s been on the market, and on the 110 to 115 million acres we estimate it’s been used on in that time. That consistency comes through year after year regardless of weather circumstances or yield environments, and it has borne itself out over literally hundreds of trials.

With TITAN, the average yield response in corn is +11.2 bu/A, and the average yield response in soybeans is +4.2 bu/A. From a consistency standpoint, we have seen a positive ROI realized about 85 to 90% percent of the time. Folks that have used TITAN over the years come back to it again and again because of that predictability.

Titan yield and break even stats

Dennis – WITY Radio: Thinking about fall fertilizer applications, some of the nutrients have gotten very expensive over the years. Have you had success slightly reducing fertility rates with TITAN?

Scott – Agricen: Over the years, we have seen that a modest reduction in the rate of applied dry fertilizer can offset the cost of TITAN with only a minimal, if any, impact on yield. We even see yields go up in some cases. TITAN has a very modest cost at $2.50 per 100 lbs of fertilizer. When you pair that with a 10-20% reduction in the applied rate of P&K, it creates a savings in that fertilizer line item.

At the end of the day, farmers get paid for bushels. We fully understand that. But when you have the ability to minimize the variability in your outcomes and stack up wins 85-90% of the time with TITAN, that's a very reasonable investment a farmer can make to enhance the value of the nutrients that are being applied this fall.
